All life relies on water for health and wellbeing. However where does this water come from and how can we, as mankind, manage water resources, the environment around them and ultimately improve the water, the ecology and the environment as a whole?

Watch the following video which outlines the European Water Framework Directive. Once you have watched this, make a list of activities within your area that could affect water quality in the various water bodies within that area.
This video will give an overview of some of the issues that are experienced in England, but will be experienced throughout Europe. Take notes on what the issues are and what actions are in place to ensure that the European Water Framework Directive is implemented.

You should research your own country and locate the RBMP published by your own Government.
In the next section you will get the opportunity to compare what happens in Scotland and what actions take place in your own country.

List the main actions from the RBMP document that are being carried out in your country to safeguard and improve water quality.
Consider the activities (e.g. industrial, farming, tourism, social, public, meteorological) and describe how they can affect water quality.
The following video highlights some of the issues that affect water quality in a drinking water catchment area. This catchment area is in the north west of England and is operated by United Utilities.

· Identify actions that have been implemented to combat the impacts of farming.
